Coffee Talk with Non-Profit Marketing Maven Carryl Tinsley

It's a sunny afternoon in Raleigh as I settle in at Benelux Coffee located in the heart of Cameron Village.  The vibe at Benelux is relaxed and comfortable. The coffee house is filled with patrons who have made Benelux a home away from home. 

Here is where I met up with Carryl Tinsley to kick off the first interview for my new blog, and a grab a good cup of coffee and a great conversation.

Carryl is the Marketing and Communications Coordinator at StepUp Ministry, a Raleigh based non-profit that helps adults and children transform their lives through employment and life skills training. We met when I joined the board of StepUp in 2017 and began working together to drive impact for the organization's various marketing activities and development programs. I found Carryl to be good-hearted, hardworking and committed to the mission of StepUp Ministry. I wanted to get to know her even better.

What made you consider a career in marketing?
In college, I signed up for a public speaking class and loved it. I continued to take communications courses and even one on advocacy. I learned that I could combine my passion for marketing with my commitment to the community. So I decided to focus on nonprofit-marketing.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the mission of StepUp Ministry and the ability to empower people who want to change their lives. I also find gratitude in telling the StepUp story to the broader community. Plus getting to know the participants and tell their personal stories is a bonus.

What surprised you about nonprofit marketing?
Sometimes you’re a one-person team. It's a different approach from other marketing roles because you do a lot, manage a high volume of activities and a magnitude of projects, which is a great learning experience.

What marketing skills would you like to improve? 
I'd like to learn more about the analytics sides of marketing. It's an essential part of measuring marketing success.

What would you tell your younger self about your career aspirations?
I had a lot of people tell me not to go into the non-profit industry, but in the end, I followed my passion. I'd say to my younger self to do the same and have the confidence that you can make it.  I had to build up my faith in the beginning.  And I definitely made the right decision.
